Significance to New Zealanders
The assassination of John F. Kennedy is of significance to New Zealand in a number of ways. The assassination came as a huge shock to not only the United States, but the rest of the world too, New Zealand included. Secondly, a New Zealand newspaper 'The Christchurch Star' (shown in the picture above) was the first to publicize any information regarding Kennedy's assassination. New Zealanders were among some of the first people around the world to receive the tragic news. Thirdly, it was as if New Zealand had lost a leader, as Kennedy was essentially the leader of the Western world due to America's dominance and because New Zealand was allied with the United States in the Cold War, which was taking place at the time. Lastly, New Zealanders in 1963 (and even today) began doubt their government and place less trust in them. If the C.I.A or United States Government did in fact plan and assassinate their president, then what is stopping us from thinking that our own government is capable of such a thing as well? Through Kennedy's assassination, we no longer believe that our or any government is free of any corruption or misconduct.
